A Palace Where The People Can Speak.

Along the river Thames stand the mighty walls of the Palace of Westminster, the seat of England's highest power, often referred to simply as Parliament.

The word derives from the french world parler which means "to speak." This is an accurate description of what happens in the houses of Parliament, where the United Kingdom's government operates.

The original palace at this location was built in the 11th century as the primary residence of the King of England. After the fire of 1512, the palace was rebuilt and used as the location for both houses of Parliament.

In 1834, a second fire tore through the building, once again reducing most of its interior to rubble. The instantly recognizable facade was created during this next phase of reconstruction.

The House of Commons and House of Lords continue to "speak" here about the issues at hand and the public are welcome to listen.
